CHICAGO – The federal appeals court in Chicago has upheld Illinois’ assault weapons ban.

Capitol News Illinois reports in a two-to-one ruling published Friday afternoon, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals panel sided with the state, finding that – quote – “even the most important personal freedoms have their limits.”

Democratic lawmakers in the General Assembly pushed for the assault weapons ban in January after last summer’s fatal shooting at the Highland Park Independence Day Parade.

Gun rights advocates filed a series of lawsuits against the law in hopes the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court might use the case to further loosen gun restrictions nationwide.
