MT. VERNON (WMIX) – A 28-year-old Mt. Vernon man was arrested Thursday after members of the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Division served a knock and announce search warrant at 4328 Lilac in Mt. Vernon.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, just after noon Thursday, a search warrant was obtained with the assistance of the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s office after an investigation indicated illegal narcotics were being sold at the home.

During the search, law enforcement reportedly seized crack cocaine, a firearm, and ammunition.

Officers arrested the resident, Dequan J. Hopkins, and took him to the Jefferson County Jail on charges of being an Armed Habitual Offender, Possession of a Firearm by a Person on Parole, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

At the time of this arrest, Hopkins was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections following a 2015 conviction for Second Degree Murder in Cook County.

The Illinois Department of Corrections was notified, and a parole violation warrant was issued.
