HERRIN – Firefighters from Herrin and several other area fire departments were called out just after 6 Wednesday morning to fight a structure fire at an abandoned building located at the corner of South 14th and Grant streets in Herrin.

According to the Herrin Fire Department, the building was boarded up. Firefighters were on the scene for several hours getting the fire under control and putting it out. Wind gusts were pushing flames toward a neighboring house. Firefighters were able to keep the flames away from that home.

No word at this time what caused the fire or how it started. The State Fire Marshal is investigating.
