SPRINGFIELD (CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS) – The Illinois State Board of Elections has ruled former President Donald Trump’s name can appear on the March 19 Republican primary ballot – but the ultimate decision will be up to the U-S Supreme Court.

Capitol News Illinois reports the panel voted unanimously Tuesday to deny an objection to Trump being on the ballot. The objectors claimed Trump was disqualified under the 14th Amendment because his actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol amounted to an insurrection.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments next week in a similar case out of Colorado. But Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich says that case didn’t influence the board’s decision.

The board also voted to turn down ballot objections to President Joe Biden. The objectors in those cases now have five days to file appeals in state court.
