MCLEANSBORO – Virginia Irene (Prince) Swafford, 99, of McLeansboro, IL passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Silver Foxes Senior Living & Rehabilitation in McLeansboro.

Virginia was born June 28, 1924, in Blairsville, IL to Cecil & Louise (Helms) Prince. On September 6, 1940, she married Matthew Swafford, who preceded her in death.

Virginia worked as a seamstress at Elder Manufacturing in McLeansboro, she made stained glass lamp shades for Steve Satterfield’s store on the McLeansboro square, and she retired from Hamilton Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation as a cook. After her retirement, she worked cleaning houses around McLeansboro. She was a member of the Pleasant Union Congregational Christian Church in Blairsville.

She loved cooking and baking, and enjoyed cleaning around the house. She took pride in keeping a clean and organized home. She enjoyed keeping busy and doing activities. She enjoyed flower gardening, talking with friends on the phone, and hosting meals with her family and friends.

Virginia is survived by a daughter LaDonna Miller of McLeansboro, six grandchildren: Brad & wife Pam Miller of McLeansboro, Bruce Miller of Mt. Vernon, IL; Beverley & husband Buddy Vaught of Carmi, IL; Becky & husband Bob Cross of McLeansboro, Kimberly Tungate & significant other Shannon Roach of New Albany, IN and Robin & husband Steve Morton of New Albany, IN; 13 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Louise Prince, her husband Matthew Swafford, a daughter Brenda Claybrooke, three brothers: Marvin Prince, Carl Prince, and infant brother Challie Prince; a sister Joan Reyling, a grandchild Bryan Miller, and a great-grandchild Landon Cross.

Funeral services for Virginia Irene (Prince) Swafford will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with Pastor Jay Vineyard officiating.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at Gholson Funeral Home.

Interment will follow the funeral service at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in McLeansboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hamilton County Senior Citizens Center, and will be accepted at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
