CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police say a man is facing charges stemming from an early Labor Day morning fight in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue.

Police were monitoring a large gathering of people in a parking lot at that location around 1:36 a.m. when a fight broke out inside the gathering and officers dispersed the crowd and attempted to arrest those involved. One of the individuals arrested was later identified as 19-year-old Tommy Garner of Carbondale.

Garner made threats toward police officers and attempted to pull away from officers while he reached toward the waistline of his pants. Officers were eventually able to take Garner into custody. A firearm that had been previously reported stolen out of Chicago was located in Garner’s pants.

Garner was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Firearm and Firearm Ammunition, Resisting a Peace Officer, and Threatening Public Official. Garner was lodged in the Jackson County Jail.
