CARMI – Francis “Frank” Phillip Speller, 84, of Carmi, IL, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, IL. He was born on December 20, 1940, in Outer London, England, the son of Francis Albert and Edith (Smith) Speller.
Frank married his high school sweetheart, Maureen Allen—whom he reunited with after 40 years—on June 3, 2005, and they shared more than 20 years of marriage together. He worked as an electrical engineer for most of his life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church of England; King Harold Masonic Lodge in England; and an honorary member of Burnt Prairie Lodge #668.
Frank’s hobbies included flying, reading, music, walking his dogs, working on old clocks, and electronics.
Frank is survived by his wife, Maureen (Allen) Speller of Carmi; his children: Karen (Alan) Shorb of Carmi, Mark Venner, Melissa (Mike James) Brand-Welch, Paul (Sarah) Speller, and daughter, Isobella, whom he thought of as his own; his grandchildren: Morgan James, McKenzie Taylor, and Annaleise Shorb; and bonus grandchild, Cal Bingman. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Jenna James, Jacob James, Oaklyn Taylor, Asher Bingman, and Hendrix Bingman; multiple nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; sister-in-law, Kathy Speller; and his Pontca Lake family, including special friends, Mark (Barb) Knight and Matt (Teresa) Powell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Hoy; siblings: David Speller, George Speller, and one sibling in infancy; and several beloved four-legged friends.
In keeping with Frank’s wishes, services will be private, and his ashes will be returned to England.
