GOREVILLE – One person was taken into custody following a weekend chase in Johnson and Pulaski counties.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the man was being chased by Illinois State Police on the east side of Goreville when he attempted to get into the sheriff’s personal vehicle while the sheriff was hiding inside it. The man discovered the sheriff was armed and waiting for him. The man then surrendered to police.
The sheriff’s office earlier in the day warned residents in the Gore Canyon Loop area to go inside their homes and lock their doors. They were told to be on the lookout for a man wearing black pants and a black jacket over a gray hoodie and to call 911 if they saw him.
Pulaski County Sheriff’s deputies were chasing the man for a traffic violation that ended with him crashing his vehicle on Gore Canyon Loop in Johnson County. He fled on foot. It was reported that the man was wearing a dark coat and dark pants and ran into the woods on Tunnel Hill Road near Illinois 37 before being caught in Goreville.
Authorities say it was originally reported that the man was picked up by another vehicle, but that information was false. The man’s name was not released.
