EVANSVILLE — Gary Dale Tucker, 74, a longtime educator affectionately known to generations as “Mr. Gary,” died Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, at the Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville.

He was born Aug. 23, 1951, the son of Johnny W. and Mildred (Smith) Tucker.

Mr. Tucker dedicated the majority of his professional career to Hamilton County Schools, primarily serving at the Hamilton County Preschool. His warm spirit made him a local fixture; he was frequently greeted by former students and families while out in the community.

Following his retirement, he focused on his family, often babysitting his younger grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Dahlgren Community Chapel and cherished his church community.

He is survived by his wife, Karen (Upchurch) Tucker; two sons, Wesley Tucker and Skyler (Jamie) Tucker; five grandchildren, Keagen, Kollin, Shauna, Jesse and Claire Tucker; a brother, Bradley (Karla) Tucker; and the fiancée of his late son, Bettye Starkey.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dakota Logan Tucker; his parents; a brother, Johnny Logan Tucker; and a sister, Phyllis Tucker Feuquay.
According to his wishes, cremation will take place. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dakota Tucker Memorial Scholarship at the SIUE School of Pharmacy.
