Cardboard boats hit the water and often sank just as fast this weekend, during the 51st annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The event at Campus Lake challenged students and community members to build and race boats made mostly of cardboard. Some teams made it across the finish line, while others went under mid-race, drawing cheers from spectators lining the shore. Event organizers say the unpredictability and creativity keep the long-running tradition popular year after year.
